The Pilgrim’s Rest bench was unveiled in 2007 alongside the Pilgrim’s Way near Harrietsham.

A nearby map and information board shows how Harrietsham may have looked to the pilgrim, Brother Percival and the places he may have visited.

It also interestingly explains that:

“Hearsay has it that young Pilgrims would marry and honeymoon in the old tower of the church, not being released until the bill was paid in full.”

It also says that Harrietsham was originally called ‘Herriagerdeshamme’ because of tranquil water meadows in the bottom of the valley.

Percival – or Percy as he is affectionately known – can be found on the North Downs Way National Trail.
